Welcome.

Our rural fishing village is small and well off the beaten path. But it’s a place with great spirit and a very special library.

Check out our library services in person...

Just steps away from our town’s general store, town office, and elementary school, our library puts great reading, access to historical records, the latest magazines, and free high-speed WiFi within reach.

Welcome to your public library

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque seaside town of Friendship, Maine, the Friendship public library serves our rural community of year-round residents, seasonal occupants, and visitors alike. Our library may be small, but we strive to keep our shelves stocked with an extensive selection of books and periodicals for readers of all ages, interests, and abilities. We welcome you to visit our Friendship, Maine library, or browse and borrow e-books from the comfort of your home.

Serving our local community for over 100 years

As our fishing village continues to grow and change, our local library works to advance and progress with each passing year. In 2022 we are celebrating the launch of our new website, a resource which hosts multiple online library tools, a streaming video service, and a marine weather forecast for our local fishing community.

Donate to the library expansion!

Fundraising has begun for the library addition. The 30′ x 30′ expansion will ease our over crowded shelves, give us room for meetings and programs, and offer limited off-street parking near the building for improved accessibility for those with mobility issues. Donations can be made at the town office or the library. Checks should be made out to “TOWN OF FRIENDSHIP” with “LIBRARY EXPANSION” in the memo line. Thank you for considering how you can make this project a reality.

— History of Friendship’s Morse Island —

The Early History of Morse Island, Friendship, Maine: 1790-1900 , written by Gary Baird, is now available at the Friendship Public Library.

This book offers a great look into what the early settlers of Meduncook Plantation (Friendship) faced as they carved a town out of the wilderness. The author has generously given the library copies to sell as a fundraiser for our planned library expansion. One hundred percent of the suggested donation of $20+ directly benefits the addition. To get a copy, call 207-832-5332 or email friendshippubliclibrary@gmail.com. We only accept cash or check (made out to “Town of Friendship Library Account”). Please include $5 if you would like to have it shipped. This book will make a great gift for anyone interested in Friendship’s history.

Movie streaming service

The library offers all of its members Kanopy, a dedicated film streaming service with over 28,000 titles, including the entire catalog of Great Courses. Each member is allowed to view up to 4 regular videos per month. In addition to these 4 videos, each member is also allowed to view all of the lectures in up to 4 Great Courses per month. To access these videos, click on the “Stream movies of Great Courses” link under “Library services on this website.” If you are using the streaming service for the first time, you must create a new account by entering your Friendship library card number (the one that starts with “P00”), your email (which will serve as your login username in the future), and a new password. Happy streaming!

First-time visitors…

In January 2022, the library’s trustees approved the creation of a new website for Friendship’s library. After reviewing a few options, they chose Friendship’s own town health officer to design it for them.

In addition to simplifying the process to check out audio and digital books, the site includes a real-time marine weather forecast for our fishermen. Courtesy of Windy.com, the data-rich forecast is based on the ECMWF model, which for Friendship Harbor has been historically more accurate than the NOAA’s GFS model.

Over the next year, the library will be trialing new services, including the possibility of a streaming video service, so be sure to check the website for updates.

If you haven’t visited the library in person for a while, please come in, relax, and check out a few books.
